Nutcracker - DECEMBER 2024
BE A CAST MEMBER IN WESTSIDE'S PRODUCTION OF THE NUTCRACKER!
We are very excited about our Nutcracker show featuring dancers from our Westside Performing Company groups.
All students in the Petite & Mini Express classes will learn the Nutcracker choreography in class, but participation in the show is strictly optional. (Note that this is an additional performance opportunity for the students, and each class will be starting their own class recital routines in January for the June recital.)

Spring Recital - June 2025
What is recital?
Our Annual recital is a chance for students to perform in costume in front of family and friends. They get to showcase a routine that demonstrates the skills they worked on throughout the year in a fun and exciting show! We will be celebrating our 42nd Annual Recital and are so excited to have you be a part of it!
When is recital?
Westside has 4 completely different shows. Dress Rehearsals and Recitals will take place between June 16th-June 21st.
Recital #1: June 17th at 6:30pm
Recital #2: June 18th at 6:30pm
Recital #3: June 20th at 6:30pm
Recital #4: June 21st at 2:00pm
* Please note we will be observing Juneteenth on June 19th and thus will not have anything scheduled that day.
When is dress rehearsal?
Each class will be assigned a specific time to come to the performance venue, usually the day before their recital. We will email the call times to you in May, and they will be available on our website . Student commitment to dress rehearsals will last approximately 45 minutes. We understand sometimes dancers are still in school during our recital week and will be unable to attend dress rehearsal. Please alert your teacher of their absence in June if this applies to you.
How much is the costume fee?
Payment of your child’s costume fee will be due on November 1st. If you are enrolled on our EFT program, it will automatically be applied to your account and withdrawn on November 1st. The costume fee for children 11 and under is $95, and for those students 12+ it is $105. This fee includes the costume, tights, and any accessories for the group routine; however it does not include the required shoes for the routine. Teachers will alert you to specific color/style of shoes needed in November. Due to increased administrative and shipping/handling costs, recital fees increase $5 in December and each month thereafter. Costumes can take up to 15 weeks from order to delivery. After February 2025, we need to check with the costume company to make sure the costume can arrive for Picture week in the spring, or at least by recital in June. Because of this, students who join class after March 1st 2025 are not guaranteed a costume, and are unfortunately ineligible to participate in recital. If, after purchasing a costume, you decide to no longer be involved in recital, please remember that costumes are ordered for your dancer specifically and are non-refundable, per the costume companies’ policy. Each class receives a different costume, specially selected for the routine they are performing. The costume fee does not include admission to the recitals in June.
When will I know the exact date of my child’s recital?
We will have all the classes assigned to a recital in March and will email all the information to you. Your child’s call time will be sent to you in May. Please hold the week of June 16th-21st to avoid any possible conflicts.
where is the recital?
All Dress Rehearsals and Recital Performances are held at the Newmark Theatre in downtown Portland - 1111 SW Broadway (at Main).
where do I buy Tickets?
Tickets will be available through Portland5 in mid-May. Exact ticket prices TBA.
How long is the recital?
The recitals typically last for two and a half hours, with a brief 15-minute intermission.
Why should my child participate in the recital?
The Recital gives each dancer a chance to perform on a professional stage in front of family and friends. Our students work very hard during the year to learn and improve on specific skills and this is their opportunity to show off all their accomplishments. We strongly encourage all of our dancers to be part of the big, year-end event! It is also professionally recorded so you can relive the fun again and again.
What if my child is in more than one class?
When coordinating recitals we do our best to not only consider the overall variety of a show, but also try our best to get students in multiple recreational classes in the same show. We also do our best to get families with more than one child in recreational classes into the same show. There are, unfortunately, occasions that this is just not possible and we appreciate your understanding if your dancer or dancers are in multiple performances. This does not apply to any of our accelerated programs (Performing Company, Troupe, Hip Hop Crew or Elite Acro).
What classes do NOT participate in recital?
Ballet 2/3, Jazz 2/3, Tap 2/3, Jazz/Acro (Friday 6:00), Open Acro (Wednesday 4:30 & Friday 4:00). These classes will not be charged for a recital costume.

Recital Costumes
Why do we order recital costumes in November?
Costume companies take several months to ship costume orders. We order our Dance Recital costumes in November to ensure availability and to avoid “Rush Order” costs. Ordering the costumes this far in advance guarantees we will get the costumes that best suit our routines and receive them in time for pictures in the Spring. There are absolutely no refunds for costumes.
What does the costume include?
The costume will have everything your child will need to wear on stage except for their shoes. This includes tights and, in some cases, a headpiece, props or other accessories. It does not include the required footwear for each class; their instructor will let you know the specific type of shoes they would like for the recital class later in the year. All shoes, except black converse for hip hop, we sell at the studio.
How do your know the costume will still fit in June?
We add extra inches to measurements for our students who are still growing. Most of our teen and adult costumes are ordered true to size. If the costume ordered does not fit upon arrival, we do our best to size exchange, however some alterations may be necessary if it is too large. These alterations, if minor, are at the expense of the family. If you order a costume later in the year, please note that your child’s size may not be available but we will do our best to order the next best fit and alter if needed.
When will the costumes arrive?
Our goal is to have all costumes handed out by the first week in May for pictures, but depending on when you paid for the costume, it may arrive at a later date. Costumes are handed out by their teacher in class as they arrive with all accessories and tights needed. Please be advised, not all costumes arrive at the same time.
When are class pictures?
Professional pictures will be taken during the month of May for the Dance Department. Specific picture times, detailed information and order forms will be available in April. All pictures will be taken during regularly scheduled class time. Group photos of last year’s dancers are on display in our upstairs lobby. Please note, if you order your costume late, we cannot guarantee it will be here in time for pictures. Also, if you did not order a costume for your child, we will do our best to find a similar color or style backup costume so they can be included in the class pictures.
Spring Acro Showcase
Westside Academy's annual Acro Showcase is held each year in the Spring, typically in March/April where all of our Acro groups perform in one action packed show. This year, our show will be held at Westside Christian High School at 3pm. Ticket information will be posted soon. Other featured guests include our Performing Company and dance Troupes which provide a great variety of ages, forms of dance and acrobatics all in one show.
